We’ve been battling illnesses of one kind and another since Rowan got sick at the end of our Germany Trip in October. Early on I persuaded Pat to try a twist on the honey lemon tea my mom used to make for my sisters and I when we were sick as kids. He became so completely addicted to this tea that several weeks ago we invested in an insulated coffee pot so I can make big batches of it, and also a thermos so he can take it to work with him. If you’re interested here’s how I make the tea–you can adjust all quantities to taste.
- 4 cups of boiling water
- juice from 2 lemons
- 5 heaping tablespoons of honey
- a finely chopped, 1-inch piece of fresh ginger
Steep the ginger in a the hot water for 20 minutes. Strain out the ginger, then add in the honey and lemon juice. That’s it! The tea is very soothing on a sore throat, and also honey, lemon, and ginger are all supposed to be great boosters for the immune system.

Sounds delicious! Am having a lovely cup of tea at work right now on my lunch break. It sounds very similar to this throat coat tea we like to buy at Safeway when we have sore throats. Some of those teas can be sort of pricey though.
Add an actual tea bag and it’ll be perfect!!
I have the shivers just thinking about adding a tea bag to this! You should try it without! I swear, we’re not crazy–it’s a pretty common homeopathic remedy for a cold/flu.
i recently heard some food blogger talk about something similar on npr — what’s an insulated coffee pot? i only have a regular tea pot

Is it like an old skool thermos?
ok so like the minute i joked about the tea bag i came down with a sore throat.
i made this yesterday and i have to admit it was pretty darn soothing and didn’t need a tea bag at all. i had to add some water because it was really strong for me (probably too big of lemons.. since everything was an estimation) but the elements together were nice. slanky thought it would taste better cold since it reminded him of lemonade. i put the leftovers in the fridge so we’ll give it a cold whirl later.
oh! i should have thought of getting the ingredients at the store today – i don’t have a sore throat in and of itself, but thanks to my continuous coughing, yay. this sounds really boring, but i often just drink warm water when i have a sore throat as it goes down more easily.
glad it helped some jody! i think the problem i normally have is with too much ginger. that can have quite the kick.
yeah, it is totally like hot lemonade. though the taste might be more palatable to some people kcold, i think eve makes a good point about the warm water…if the tea was cold it probably wouldn’t soothe your throat so much.
hope you are feeling better soon eve and jody!
